Strange Times

The title about sums it up. These are indeed strange and interesting times. People feel a lot of uncertainty with AI, climate change, polarized politics, etc. I have to remind myself that all of that is beyond my direct control. The best I can do is to take a deep breath while I continue connecting with my fellow humans via my art, all the while trying to remind myself and everyone that there is so much beauty in the moment we become present and observe the details of the natural world around us and inside of ourselves. From time to time, I’ve been creating these contemplative pieces that attempt to capture a moment of presence and wonder. My mind often wanders back to childhood as I find myself again and again. The reference that I used is from a 2018 photograph of my son, Harrison, that I took in preparation for this piece. He was originally burning a palm fronds. The piece never got made because I felt it was missing the narrative element that the newspaper and the words finally offered.
